School Improvement

Family and Civic Engagement

House Bill 1 establishes family and civic engagement requirements for Ohio’s schools, families, and communities. Together, these entities work to ensure all children have the supports needed to graduate from high school prepared for additional educational experiences, the workforce and health lifestyles. Ohio’s goal is to have high-performing, district-based family and civic engagement teams that work with county Family and Children First Councils (FCFC) to systematically connect all children, youth and families who are in need of school- and community-based services and programs..

As of June 30, 2010, every school district must have

  • Appointed a family and civic engagement (FCE) team;
  • Developed and written a FCE plan;
  • Created a job description outlining qualifications and responsibilities of an FCE coordinator; and
  • Submit the FCE plan to the county Family and Children First Council (FCFC).
