Instructional Supports

Co-Teaching

In inclusive schools, teachers collaborate and demonstrate a shared responsibility for all students. Students not only have access to the general education curriculum but they also receive the supports they need to participate in this instruction and to be successful.

It is important to remember that special education is a service, not a place. In other words, a student with a disability does not automatically receive services in a special education classroom. Instead, the IEP team determines what services the student needs based on his or her current level of performance and then decides where those services should be provided.

Inclusion does not mean that every special education student spends every minute of every day in a general education setting. What it does mean is that each special education student is guaranteed a free appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment (LRE). Depending on the student’s needs, services may be provided in a number of settings by a number of individuals.

Co-teaching, as a service delivery option designed to address the needs of students in an inclusive classroom by having a general education and a special service provider teach together in the same classroom, is gaining popularity in SST 11 schools. Key components of effective co-teaching include (1) two or more professionals who (2) co-plan, co-instruct, and co-assess (3) a heterogeneous group of students (4) in the same physical space. The co-teaching approaches are:

            1. One Teach; One Support
            2. Parallel Teaching
            3. Station Teaching
            4. Alternative Teaching
            5. Team Teaching
