Alternate Assessment

Under Ohio statutes, all students are required to participate in the Ohio Assessment and Accountability System, including students with disabilities. The Alternate Assessment for Students with Disabilities (AASWD) is designed to evaluate the performance of students with the most significant cognitive disabilities for whom regular assessments, even with accommodations, are not appropriate. The AASWD allows for a collection of student work (called a Collection of Evidence, or COE) to be submitted as evidence of student performance on tasks aligned to Ohio Academic Content Standards.

It is the expectation of the Ohio Department of Education that a proportionally small number of students with disabilities will participate in the AASWD. IEP team members should carefully review the eligibility criteria to ensure that the Alternate Assessment is the most appropriate choice for a particular child with a disability.

2011-12 Alternate Assessment Training

SST 11 Alternate Assessment trainings have been scheduled for the 2011-12 school year.

Full-day workshops are designed to provide (1) the ODE official PowerPoint™ presentation; (2) information about the CoED program; and, (3) to provide additional time for teachers new to AASWD to receive more in-depth information, opportunities to practice writing cases, and to begin planning their own assessments. Collaboration and networking with others are encouraged.

Half-day sessions are designed for the teacher who is experienced with AASWD and wishes to hear about any changes in the process, and refocus on the process for the coming year.

Please pre-register for one of these sessions through STARS, the Ohio Department of Education's online registration system. If you have any difficulties with this process or have registration questions, please contact Barbara Conner by email (barbara.conner@escco.org) or by telephone (614.753.4679).

Since SST 11 will not receive printed copies of the 2011-12 Alternate Assessment for Students with Disabilities Administration Manual from the Ohio Department of Education, Office for Exceptional Children, SST 11 will not provide print copies of the Manual or the official PowerPoint™ presentation.

Therefore, you will need to bring your own copy of: 1) the 2011-12 Alternate Assessment for Students with Disabilities Administration Manual; and 2) the supplemental 2011-12 PowerPoint™ Slides. These resources are available for download on ODE's "Ohio’s Alternate Assessment for Students with Disabilities" webpage.

Additionally, it has been determined by ODE that the 2010-11 Alternate Assessment for Students with Disabilities Administration Manual may also be used, as there were virtually no changes made for the 2011-12 Alternate Assessment for Students with Disabilities Administration Manual.

You may bring a laptop and make use of the ESCCO Wi-Fi to connect with the ODE AASWD website to view the documents used in the training. The 2011-12 Alternate Assessment for Students with Disabilities Administration Manual and resources may be downloaded to your personal USB or other storage device for use during and after the workshop.
